Background: Six French people released earlier this month after being held prisoner for eight months by Polisario guerrillas in the Sahara, say they were kept prisoners on Algerian territory. At a news conference in Paris on Tuesday, nearly a week after their release, they told newsmen about their ordeal.

SYNOPSIS: The news conference was held at the headquarters of the League for the Rights of Man, and provided the first detailed account of the months in captivity for the six French people, five men and a woman, at the hands of the Polisario Front for the Liberation of the Western Sahara. The hostages, reunited with their families less than a week before, told how they'd been punched and beaten in captivity. And with the aid of a map of a Sahara, they showed the assembled newsmen were they'd been held. They said it was around Tindouf, inside Algeria. The Algerians are supporting the Front in their efforts to obtain an independent Western Sahara. The former Spanish territory was ceded to Mauritania and Morocco when the Spanish pulled out at the beginning of 1976. The hostages said for the first four months in captivity they'd lived in a tent.
