    Tens of thousands of people crowded a Lagos pleasure beach on Wednesday (8 September) to witness the death by firing squad of eight convicted criminals. The men were all robbers, end had been sentenced to death under the decree instituted last year by the Federal Military Government which ordered public executions in an attempt to check the mounting post civil war crime wave.

    Visnews cameraman Shittu Fabiyi shot this film as the men, one of them shouting to the crowd, were brought forward and roped to the stakes. He filmed throughout the final seconds of gunfire, and there is some dramatic sound-on-film exchanges between the prisoners and an army officer.

    SYNOPSIS: Tens of thousands of people crowded onto a Lagos pleasure beach on Wednesday to witness the death by firing squad of eight convicted criminals. One of them cried out to the onlookers as troops tied him to a stake.

    The men were brought to the firing point with their ankles manacled. But one of them shouted continuously.

    The men were sentenced to be shot for armed robbery under a decree passed last year by the Federal Military Government in a move to cut the Rising crime rate which followed on the heels of the Nigerian Civil War. Sever of these men were involved in the theft of GBP11,000 sterling last March. One was a noted criminal, who had confessed to taking part in ten major robberies and murders during the last six years.
