Background: Boxing...and the contenders for Muhammed Ali's vacant heavyweight title, South African Gerrie Goetzee and John Tate of the United States, met each other at a pre-fight medical on Tuesday (16 October).
SYNOPSIS: According to observers Tate looked supremely fit at the medical for the fight on Saturday (20 October).
His opponent Coetzee watched the proceedings showing few emotions. Both men ignored each other at the medical, apart from the occasional glare...and neither said a word to each other. Coetzee, who has undergone surgery to a broken fist, ignored all questions from newsmen...though the fight is attracting tremendous interest in South Africa. After the examinations both Coetzee and Tate were pronounced fit.
The two fighters will meet once again before Saturday's fight, for the weigh-in on Friday. Whoever wins the fight, for the World Boxing Association title, will be in line for a lucrative challenge against the more universally recognised World Boxing Council champion, Larry Holmes.
