Four members of Israel's Olympic team were buried in a joint grave on Thursday. The internment took place at a ceremony just outside Tel Aviv, and followed a memorial service at Lydda Airport when the bodies first arrived from Munich. Six more of the victims of Arab guerrillas have been buried separately in Israel, and the eleventh was flown back to his birthplace in the United States. About five thousand people crowded round the grave at the mass funeral and several people fainted in the crush.
Since the Munich massacre Israel's leaders have hinted at retaliation not only against the guerrillas but also against any country harbouring them. In September 1968, when Arabs shot up an Israeli plane at Athens airport, Israel replied by sending a commando squad to Beirut -- where the guerrillas were based -- to destroy thirteen Arab airlines.
SYNOPSIS: More than five thousand people crowded the cemetery just outside Tel Aviv for the burial of four members of the Israeli Olympic team in a communal grave.
The Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv officiated, and surviving members of the Olympic squad were prominent among the mourners.
While the victims of the Munich massacre were interred public opinion in Israel was mounting for reprisals against the Arabs behind the attack. And Israeli leaders were hinting that they might retaliate not only against the guerrillas but also against countries harbouring them -- just as in 1968 they replied to a guerrilla attack on an Israeli airliner by destroying thirteen planes at Beirut airport. But it will be far from easy to strike a blow that would hurt the guerrillas without alienating world opinion by also killing Arab civilians. Observers say a crude reprisal attack on an Arab country would not deter the gunmen though it could influence the Arab countries to curtail guerrilla operation based in their territories. Some Israeli strategist have suggested that Israel should itself resort to underground tactics and form special commando squads to track down and exterminate the Black September movement which admitted being behind the Munich incident.
