SYNOPSIS: Jordanian Government troops and Palestine Commandos have clashed once again -- this time, in the country's Jerash District, 50 miles north of the capital, Amman.

Although television cameramen have not been able tot film the actual fighting, reports from both sides confirm that heavy fighting has taken place since the clash began earlier this week. The local population -- mainly shepherds and roaming tribesmen -- are fleeing the area. The Commandos claim that the Government is trying to liquidate them in contravention of the peace treaty between the two sides. The Government, however, claims it is merely trying to stop the Commandos trying to undermine the economy by shooting at local farmers. Reports from the settlement on Thursday indicate that the Government is winning the battle, and have managed drive Commando units from their strongholds. Commando leader Yasser Arafat, meanwhile, left the Palestine National Congress meeting in Cairo on Thursday. He made an urgent flight to a Commando position on the Jordan-Syria border to review the situation.
