Background: The Chairman of the Japanese Socialist Party, Mr. Tomomi Narita, has bitterly attacked the Japanese Government over the Lockheed bribery scandal.
Speaking at the opening of the 39th Japanese Socialist Party Conference in Tokyo, on Saturday (6 March), Mr. Narita said the Lockheed case had exposed the fact that Japan was under the strong control of the United States, not only in military policy but also politically and economically. The Chairman said the case was developing into an unprecedented scandal.
Mr. Narita told the delegates at the conference that the Socialist Party would probe the scandal not only in the Diet -- the Japanese Parliament -- but also outside the parliament.
The Socialist Party Chairman said the government could no longer deny that the Lockheed case involved high officials.
Mr. Narita warned that when the entire Lockheed story came out, the Japanese Cabinet would be forced to resign en masse. He said in such a case the Socialist Party was prepared to form a democratic election caretaker Cabinet.
The opening of the conference was attended by more than 500 deputies and guests including the chairman of the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan, Mr. Makoto Ichikawa.
