    LEBANON TODAY (SUNDAY) JOINED EIGHT OTHER ARAB COUNTRIES IN CAIRO FOR THE SECOND DAY OF THE ARAB LEAGUE PETROLEUM COMMITTEE'S 14TH CONFERENCE. WHEN THE CONFERENCE STARTED YESTERDAY ONLY EIGHT OF THE 13 MEMBER COUNTRIES WERE PRESENT.

    NO OFFICIAL REASON HAS BEEN GIVEN FOR THE ABSENCE OF JORDAN, THE SUDAN AND MOROCCO. TUNISIA STAYED AWAY AS PART OF ITS POLICY TO BOYCOTT ALL ARAB LEAGUE ACTIVITIES.

    THE COUNTRIES TAKING PART IN ADDITION TO LEBANON ARE ALGERIA, SAUDI ARABIA, IRAQ, THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, LIBYA, YEMEN KUWAIT AND SYRIA. BAHREIN, ALTHOUGH NOT A LEAGUE MEMBER, IS ALSO REPRESENTED.

    THE MAIN ITEM UNDER DISCUSSION IS A UNIFIED PETROLEUM LAW FOR LEAGUE MEMBERS. THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC HAS PROPOSED AN ARAB OIL ORGANISATION TO COORDINATE OIL POLICIES BETWEEN THE COUNTRIES.

    THE COMMITTEE WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSING A COORDINATED APPROACH TO THE INTERNATIONAL PETROLEUM CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN MEXICO NEXT APRIL.
