Background: The first anniversary of the rise to power of General Gabriel Ramanantsoa and his National Union government was held in Madagascar on Sunday (13 May). The Government declared it a "day of reflection", and ordered troops out in Tananarive to prevent public demonstrations.
The events which led to the downfall of President Philibert Tsirinana in May 1972 were much more violent. 34 people were killed in rioting. Scenes of these events are included in this film.
The Secretary-General of the M.F.M. (Power to the Proletariat) Party, Manandafy Rakotonirina, was arrested for planning to hold a demonstration. His party said they would gather in front of the city hall, which was ruined in last year's rioting, but a strong force of police was on patrol and military aircraft flew overhead.
