  • Description

Seventy Australian golfers from Melbourne have set a world record for the fastest eighteen-hole round of golf.

On Saturday (2 December) they took just 10 minutes and 54 seconds to complete the round. Their time was 4.4 seconds inside the previous record, established in Ontario, Canada, two years ago.

The record was made in the presence of an official from the Guinness Book of Records who said it would be officially recognised.

The players -- 35 professionals and 35 amateurs -- did not play shots simultaneously. But, the moment the ball was putted out, another was teed up and driven from the next tee. The golfers positioned themselves around the 5.793-mitre (yard) course and played shots when the ball landed near them.

No score was kept -- this was not part of this particular attempt -- and no balls were lost.

SYNOPSIS: Melbourne golfers set a new world record for a complete round of 18-hole golf on Saturday. They beat the previous record by just over 4 seconds. And -- all 70 of them -- managed the course in just ten minutes 54 seconds. A G.T.V. Channel Nine, Melbourne reporter tells the story from the first tee:
