  • Description

MRS ANN JONES BECAME THE FIRST BRITON IN SIX YEARS TO REACH THE WIMBLEDON WOMEN'S SINGLES FINALS TO BE PLAYED ON SATURDAY, WHEN SHE BEAT AMERICAN MISS ROSEMARY CASALS 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, IN THE SEMI-FINALS TODAY (THURSDAY). MRS JONES WILL MEET ANOTHER AMERICAN, MRS BILLIE JEAN KING, WHO ALSO WON HER MATCH TODAY.

MISS CASALS BEGAN THE MATCH LIKE A WHIRLWIND PLAYING SUPERB ATTACKING TENNIS AT TREMENDOUS SPEED. AFTER MRS JONES HELD SERVICE IN THE OPENING GAME, THE SPANISH-AMERICAN GIRL FROM SAN FRANCISCO SWEPT THROUGH TO WIN SIX OF THE NEXT SEVEN GAMES.

BUT MRS JONES, RENOWNED FOR HER FIGHTING QUALITIES, CAME BACK TO TAKE THE SECOND SET.

MISS CASALS WAS UNLUCKY TO LOSE HER DELIVERY AT THE START OF THE THIRD AND DECIDING SET. SHE STOOD AT ADVANTAGE POINT WHEN A DEEP LOB FROM MRS JONES LOOKED WELL OUT, BUT THERE WAS NO CALL FROM THE LINESMAN.

HOWEVER THE AMERICAN CAME STORMING BACK TO TAKE MRS JONES' DELIVERY IN THE NEXT GAME AND PLAY CONTINUED WITH NERVE RACKING INTENSITY. MRS JONES WAS THROUGH AGAIN IN THE NINTH GAME BUT AGAIN MISS CASALS HAULED HER BACK AT 5-ALL.

TWO SEARING PASSING SHOTS AND A LOB GAVE THE ENGLISH GIRL YET ANOTHER BREAK FOR 6-5, AND THIS TIME SHE CONFIDENTLY HELD SERVICE FOR LOVE AND WAS ACCLAIMED BY A MIGHTY CHEER FROM THE PENT UP CROWD.
