    MR. NEHRU MADE HIS FIRST MAJOR PUBLIC APPEARANCE AFTER HIS ILLNESS AT INDIA'S REPUBLIC DAY PARADE IN NEW DELHI YESTERDAY (SUNDAY).

    HE DROVE TO IT IN A COVERED CAR INSTEAD OF USING AN OPEN JEEP AS HE HAS DONE IN PAST YEARS. CROWDS WATCHED IN SILENCE AS THE PRIME MINISTER MOVED SLOWLY FORM HIS CAR TO THE REVIEWING STAND.

    A DOCTOR AND NURSE STOOD BY HIS CHAIR AND A CUSHION WAS HANDED TO HIM BUT HE TURNED IT AWAY AND SAT WELL PROTECTED BY RUGS FOR MORE THAN TWO HOURS IN A COLD WIND.

    MR. NEHRU SAT NEXT TO LORD MOUNTBATTEN, BRITAIN'S LAST VICEROY AND GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF INDIA, WHO IS ON A FIVE-DAY VISIT.

    100,000 PEOPLE WATCHED THE PARADE. THE CHINESE DELEGATIONS WERE NOT PRESENT FOR THE DECORATION CEREMONY OF THREE INDIAN OFFICERS FOR THEIR SERVICES IN THE 1962 SINO-INDIAN BORDER DISPUTE. THE DELEGATION TOOK THEIR SEATS ON THE REVIEWING STAND AFTERWARDS.

    AT THE END OF THE PARADE, MR. NEHRU LOOKING TIRED WALKED SLOWLY BACK TO HIS CAR UNAIDED. LORD MOUNTBATTEN FOLLOWED. AFTER INDIA, HE WILL BE VISITING BURMA AND CEYLON.
