Background: VARIOUS, SANTA CATARINA, SOUTHERN BRAZIL

At least ten people died and two hundred thousand made homeless in recent floods in Brazil's Southern Santa Catarina province. Rivers swollen by days of heavy rain in July and early August spilled flood waters up to fifteen metres (yards) deep. Government spokesman Sergio Sachet said the floods washed out highways, submerged entire towns and isolated fifty-two communities. Telephone links with dozens of towns were cut and fifteen others were without electricity or drinking water. He said many towns could not be reached , even by helicopter, and State Governor Espiridiao Amin declared a state of emergency in 58 communities. Among some of the worst hit areas were the towns of Blumenau, Rio do Sur and Bruque. In Blumenau, an estimated sixty thousand people were homeless after the Itajai-Acu River burst its banks, and water up to three metres (yards) deep covered the city centre. Victims were temporarily housed in schools and public buildings, and Air Force helicopters were ordered to fly in supplies of food, clothing and medicines to the affected areas. Last year, floods in the region killed sixty-five people and left a quarter of a million homeless, and with more rain predicted from the region, authorities feared a far greater number of dead and homeless.
