YVES ST. LAURENT, THE YOUNG AND POWERFUL COUTURIER, WAS THE LAST TO PRESENT HIS COLLECTION?

  • Description

YVES ST. LAURENT, THE YOUNG AND POWERFUL COUTURIER, WAS THE LAST TO PRESENT HIS COLLECTION AT THE END OF THE PARIS FASHION WEEK - AND HIS CREATIONS BORE THE LONG, FLOWING-LINE TRADEMARK OF THE "THIRTIES".

AN ANKLE-LENGTH PASTEL-PRINTED MAUVE-AND-PEACH SILK EVENING DRESS WAS TYPICAL OF THE COLLECTION. IT ALSO STRESSED ANOTHER ST. LAURENT MUST OF THIS YEAR - THE KNIFE-SHARP PLEATS. THE STRAIGHT AND LOOSE CARDIGAN WAS WORN OVER A PALE MAUVE SILK BLOUSE.

FOR DAYTIME WEAR - A DARK BROWN MAN-TAILORED GABARDINE SUIT. AGAIN ANKLE-LENGTH AND LOOKING MUCH LIKE THE "UNISEX" TROUSERS WHICH HAVE SO OFTEN FEATURED IN HIS COLLECTIONS PAST AND PRESENT. THE SHORT JACKET COVERS A SILK BLOUSE WITH A FLOWING CRAVATTE-TYPE FRONT AND A WIDE LEATHER BELT. IT IS ALL TOPPED BY A SLOUCH FELT MATCHING HAT. AT THE FAR END - STYLIZED BROGUES, AND A CONCESSION TO THOSE WHO FEEL THAT A LONG SKIRT IS NOT SUFFICIENTLY REVEALING: UNBUTTONED, THE SKIRT SHOWS A FINE EXPANSE OF LEG AND KNEE.

ALTHOUGH THE MAJORITY OF THE ST. LAURENT COLLECTION FORSOOK THE MINI-SKIRT THIS YEAR - HE WENT FURTHER BACK INTO FASHION HISTORY TO COME UP WITH A BLACK AND RED "FLAPPER" DRESS FOR COCKTAILS. SEQUINS AND FRINGES ON MOUSSELINE - THE ORIGINAL "CHARLESTON DRESS."
