  • Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY FORTH YEARS BAD WEATHER STOPPED THE TRADITIONAL CHRISTIAN PROCESSION FROM BETHPAGE, ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES, TO ST. ANNE'S CHURCH INSIDE THE ST. STEPHEN'S GATE OF THE OLD CITY.

THE PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION IS HELD EACH YEAR TO COMMEMORATE CHRIST'S TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM FIVE DAYS BEFORE HIS CRUCIFIXION.

HUNDREDS OF PRIESTS, NUNS, SCHOOLBOYS, AND PILGRIMS FROM EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATE HAD GATHERED IN JERUSALEM FOR THIS YEAR'S PROCESSION, BUT ONLY A FEW GROUPS BEARING PALM BRANCHES AND FRONDS ATTEMPTED TO BRAVE THE SQUALLY CONDITIONS ALONG THE ROUTE. THEY SOON ABANDONED HOPE OF COMPLETING THE JOURNEY, AND THE PATRIARCH CANCELLED THE EVENT.

SPECIAL STEPS HAVE BEEN BUILT DOWN THE MOUNT OF OLIVES THIS YEAR BY THE ISRAELI MINISTRY OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS TO SAVE THE PILGRIMS CROSSING JEWISH GRAVES. ONLY TOW FRENCH SISTERS DISAPPEARED INTO THE RAIN TO MAKE THEIR OWN PILGRIMAGE.
