  • Description

In India, former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi is continuing her nationwide "Save India" campaign, designed to discredit the present government of Prime Minister Morarji Desai and the ruling Janata party. On Wednesday (27 September) she toured the Aligarh district in Uttar Predesh.

SYNOPSIS: Throughout her day-long tour through the villages of the Aligarh district Mrs. Gandhi drew large and enthusiastic crowds. Here in Bulandsher the people showed support by cheering, presenting her with garlands and shouting slogans.

Later, she found similar support in Sikandrabad, where she was called upon to make an impromptu speech. The theme of her campaign has been to denounce the government of the ruling Janata Party. She blames them for rising prices, increased unemployment and lawlessness. Her latest allegations are that the government has mis-handled flood relief. Uttar Pradesh was one of the worst hit states during the recent floods.

Mrs. Gandhi's final stop was Khurja, where she addressed another large rally.

A government-appointed commission has accused Mrs. Gandhi of excesses during the 1975 State of Emergency. She has refused to testify before the commission, saying there is no legal or constitutional reason why she should. Instead she is speaking to return to the mainstream of political life by rallying her support in the country, and by opposing the ruling Janata party.
