Background: The Elysee Palace - France's Presidential residence - was the scene of a meeting today (Thursday) between Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and President Georges Pompidou of France. The Emperor, who arrived from Switzerland, spent only one day in France.

Although no official statement was made on the subjects discussed between the two Heads of State during a private luncheon at the Elysee Palace, it is believed that their discussions centred mainly on the Middle East crisis, African unity, and Franco-Ethiopian relations.

Relations have long been cordial between the two countries - and French is the second language in Ethiopia, where it is compulsory in the secondary schools.

Emperor Haile Selassie has been away from Addis Ababa for nearly one month during which he has visited Japan, Russia and Switzerland. Before returning to Ethiopia he will also visit Egypt and Kenya.
