    PRIME MINSTER, MRS. BANDARANAIKE, IN AN INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE URGED THE PEOPLE TO REDEDICATE THEMSELVES ONCE AGAIN TO THE IDEALS WHICH ANIMATED THEM IN THEIR STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM.

    PRIME MINISTER MRS. BANDARANAIKE, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL AND HIS WIFE, THE CHIEF JUSTICE, COMMANDERS OF VARIOUS FORCES AND OTHER DIGNITARIES WATCHED THE MARCH-PAST FROM A SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED DAIS.

    AN ELEPHANT MASCOT LED THE MARCH-PAST. THE TUSKER NAMED KANDULA, RAISED HIS TRUNK AS IT REACHED THE DAIS IN SALUTATION.

    ONE OF THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF THE PARADE WAS THE HISTORICAL PAGEANT ORGANISED BY THE SCHOOLS. THE PAGEANT DEPICTED THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE NATION FROM THE TIME OF THE PORTUGUESE PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME.
