  • Description

A HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTEEN PEOPLE DIED WHEN THEIR AIR INDIA BOEING 707 - BOUND FOR LONDON AND NEW YORK CRASHED NEAR THE SUMMIT OF WESTERN EUROPE'S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN, MT. BLANC JUST AFTER SEVEN O'CLOCK THIS MORNING (MONDAY) IT DISAPPEARED FROM GENEVA AIRPORT'S RADAR SCREEN.

BECAUSE OF HEAVY CLOUD, OVER TWO HOURS PASSED BEFORE THE SCATTERED FRAGMENTS OF WRECKAGE WERE FOUND. THE BOEING HAD CRASHED ABOUT THREE-HUNDRED YARDS BELOW THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT BLANC.

HELICOPTERS AND PLANES HAD DIFFICULTIES IN LOCATING THE WRECKAGE. THEN, BEYOND THE VALLOT HUT, AT OVER 14,000 FEET, ALL THAT WAS LEFT CAME INTO VIEW. TINY METAL AND ORANGE COLOURED OBJECTS, SCATTERED OVER AN AREA A THOUSAND YARDS LONG BY THREE-HUNDRED YARDS WIDE ON THE FRENCH SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN.

IT SEEMED TO ONE PILOT THAT THE PLANE HAD FIRST HIT THE MOUNTAIN ON THE ITALIAN SIDE, CRASHED THROUGH A THIN ROCK RIDGE AND THEN SPILLED OVER ONTO THE FRENCH SIDE OF MOUNT BLANC.

THE PLANE HAD LEFT BOMBAY LAST NIGHT AND CALLED AT DELHI AND BEIRUT. IT WAS SCHEDULED TO TOUCH DOWN AT GENEVA, PARIS AND LONDON BEFORE FLYING ON TO NEW YORK. TWENTY-FOUR OF THE PASSENGERS HAD INTENDED TO DISEMBARK IN LONDON. SIX HELD BRITISH PASSPORTS BUT THE MAJORITY WERE INDIAN CITIZENS.

AMONG THEM WAS INDIA'S TOP ATOMIC SCIENTIST DR. H.J. BHABHA, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF INDIA'S ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. ALSO A FELLOW OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY, HE MET QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH DURING THEIR TOUR OF INDIA'S ATOMIC PLANT AT TROMBAY IN FEBRUARY 1961. THE PILOT, CAPTAIN J. T. DE SOUZA, FLEW AS CO-PILOT ON POPE PAUL'S JOURNEY TO INDIA THIRTEEN MONTHS AGO. ONE OF THE PLANE'S STEWARDESSES ESCAPED THE CRASH. SWISS-BORN DORIS LUDY REPORTED SICK WHEN THE BOEING TOUCHED DOWN AT BEIRUT....THE PLANE FLEW OFF, ON ITS FINAL LEG, WITHOUT HER.
