Background: South Vietnamese President Thieu visited Hue on Thursday (4 May) to see first-hand the situation in the ancient cultural capital which now faces the threat of a North Vietnamese assault.

An honour guard met the President on arrival, and after a quick inspection President Thieu drove straight to military headquarters for a briefing on the city's defences.

President Thieu's visit was seen by observers to lift morale in the city. There were earlier reports of looting by South Vietnamese soldiers, but there was no evidence protected for the visiting leader.

Major General Ngo Quang Troung accompanied President Thieu for the visit. General Troung is reputed to be the best in South Vietnam, and he was later to give pep talks to the troops who may have to remain to defend the outside of the city should an attack occur.
