    SOME 100,000 MOURNERS FOLLOWED THE FUNERAL CORTEGE IN KHARTOUM YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) OF SAYED SIR ALI EL MIRGHANI, THE SUDANESE MOSLEM LEADER WHO DIED ON SUNDAY AGED ABOUT 98. SIR ALI'S ELDEST SON, MOHAMED OSMAN, HAS BEEN DECLARED HIS SUCCESSOR AS HEAD OF THE KHATMIA MOSLEMS, NUMBERING SOME 2,500,000 PEOPLE.

    ALL SHOPS, BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS IN KHARTOUM WERE CLOSED FOR THE DAY AND BUILDINGS DRAPED IN BLACK IN MEMORY OF SIR ALI, WHO WAS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN SUDANESE HISTORY. AS SPECIAL TRAINS BROUGHT THOUSANDS OF SIR ALI'S FOLLOWERS FOR THE FUNERAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WERE TAKING STEPS TO MEET A THREATENED SHORTAGE OF FOOD.

    ARMED FORCES OFFICERS CARRIED THE COFFIN AT THE HEAD OF THE PROCESSION - THE LARGEST IN KHARTOUM IN LIVING MEMORY. KNIGHTED BY BRITAIN IN 1919, SIR ALI IS REPORTED TO HAVE TWICE TURNED DOWN BRITISH OFFERS TO MAKE HIM KING OF SUDAN. HIS TWO SONS, INCLUDING MOHAMED OSMAN, HIS SUCCESSOR, ARE ACTIVE IN THE PRO-EGYPTIAN NATIONAL UNIONIST PARTY OF PRESIDENT ISMAIL EL AZHARI.

    SIR ALI, ONE OF THE RICHEST MEN IN SUDAN, OWNED HUGE AREAS OF NORTHERN SUDAN AND ALSO SAUDI ARABIA. THROUGHOUT THE SUDAN'S STRUGGLE OR INDEPENDENCE, THE MIRGHANI SECT FAVOURED CLOSER TIES WITH EGYPT, AS OPPOSED TO THE MAHDISTS, WHO STOOD FOR INDEPENDENCE PLUS SOME TIES WITH BRITAIN.
