  • Description

A RACIAL DEMONSTRATION IN CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA. MORE THAN 300 PEOPLE, MOST OF THEM STUDENTS AND MANY OF THEM WHITE, PARADED DOWN THE MAIN STREET ON SATURDAY. THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, AND OTHER PUBLIC FACILITIES AND PRESSING THEIR DEMANDS FOR AN END TO RACIAL SEGREGATION. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS WITHOUT VIOLENCE. A FEW STUDENTS WHO ATTEMPTED TO SIT DOWN ON THE PAVEMENT WERE QUICKLY TAKEN AWAY BY POLICE.

(IN WASHINGTON YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DEFEATED FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE DAY ATTEMPTS TO NARROW THE SCOPE OF THE CONTROVERSIAL PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS SECTION OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL. THE HOUSE HAS ALREADY PASSED THE BILL'S TOUGH NEW SAFEGUARDS FOR NEGRO VOTING.)
