  • Description

Fresh trouble broke out on the Madrid University campus on Thursday (20 January) as students and police battled on the fourth consecutive day of violence.

Large numbers of armed riot police in jeeps and on horseback spent more than two hours breaking up groups of students who had gathered to protest against the recent dismissal of 4,000 medical students and the continuing presence of police on the University campus.

There were reports of widely scattered incidents throughout the city as groups of students tried in vain to start protest marches. Police out access roads onto the campus itself and a helicopter hovered overhead during the morning and early afternoon.

Four foreign newsmen who witnessed the scene were ordered away and were later detained by police for about an hour. Their cameras and tape recorders were confiscated. Visnews cameraman Mike Core managed to film Thursday's disturbances without interruption.

Four foreign newsmen were also reported to have been detained, and their cameras and tape recorders confiscated. By dusk the situation had quietened down, but police continued their patrols along areas adjoining the university.
