  • Description

An unseeded sixteen-year-old, Jehangir Khan of Pakistan, has won the World Amateur Squash Championships. He is the youngest person ever to do so. After beating three top seeds in the earlier rounds, Jehangir Khan himself in the final against Philip Kenyon, of England in Australia on Monday (15 October).

SYNOPSIS: Jehangir Khan, in the green-trimmings, got off to a bad start, losing the first game 9-2. However, after overcoming his nerves, he began to ge back in the march.

As the second game went on, Kenyon's drop shot, so formidable in the first game, became less effective. Consistent play from khan forced Kenyon to the back of the court -- with some success.

kenyon lost the second game 9-3, and, as his schoolboy opponents confidence grew, got off to a bad start in the third. Gradually, the game began to slip away from him, and Khan emphasised his superiority by winning 9-3, often employing Kenyon's speciality -- the drop shot -- to good effect.

Soon, a remarkable victory was just one point away. At 8-5 in the fourth game, Khan served for the match.

It was an emotional moment -- both for winner and loser.

At sixteen, Jehangir Khan is the youngest player ever to have won the amateur championship. After the match he said he had never felt confident of winning, because amazingly enough he is not considered good enough to play for Pakistan.
