    A COURT MARTIAL IN ATHENS WAS TOLD TODAY (MONDAY) THAT THE FORMER CYPRIOT MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND INTERIOR, MR. POLYCARPOS GEORGHADJIS, HAD PROVIDED THE EXPLOSIVE FOR AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AGAINST THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS, IN AUGUST.

    THE COURT MARITAL IS TRYING FIFTEEN PEOPLE, CHARGED WITH THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT. THE ALLEGED LEADER OF THE PLOT IS ALEXANDROS PANAGOULIS, SAID BY A WITNESS TODAY TO HAVE BEEN PROVIDED WITH THE EXPLOSIVES AND A FALSE PASSPORT BY MR. GEORGHADJIS.

    THE ATTEMPT ON MR. PAPADOPOULOS' LIFE WAS MADE ON AUGUST 13, WHILE HE WAS DRIVING ON A COASTAL ROAD OUTSIDE ATHENS. A BOMB EXPLODED ON THE ROADWAY SECONDS AFTER HIS CAR HAD PASSED BY.

    THE MAIN WITNESS TODAY WAS A GREEK ARMY INTELLIGENCE OFFICER, LIEUTENANT COLONEL PILITSES, WHO SAID PANAGOULIS HAD DESERTED FROM THE GREEK ARMY IN 1967 AND GONE TO CYPRUS, WHERE HE WAS PLACED UNDER THE CARE OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CYPRUS COMMUNIST PARTY, MR. VASSOS LYSSARIDES. COLONEL PILITSES SAID IT WAS THROUGH MR. LYSSARIDES THAT PANAGOULIS MADE CONTACT WITH MR. GEORGHADJIS.

    PANAGOULIS TOLD THE COURT MARTIAL TODAY THAT HE WAS TOO ILL TO STAND TRIAL. HE WAS SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR AN OUTBURST AGAINST THE PROSECUTOR.

    THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL DAYS. FIFTY WITNESSES ARE TO BE HEARD.
