Background: TRIUMPH AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (SATURDAY) FOR MARIA BUENO OF BRAZIL. SHE BEAT THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION MISS MARGARET SMITH 6-4, 7-9, 6-3, IN THE WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP.

IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING MATCHES EVER SEEN MOST OF THE DRAMA AND THRILLS WAS PACKED INTO THE SECOND SET. MISS BUENO HAD WON THE FIRST WITH LITTLE DIFFICULTY BUT THE SECOND BEGAN WITH MISS SMITH PLAYING CONFIDENTLY. THE SCORE MOUNTED UNTIL MISS SMITH HAD WON FOUR GAMES WITH MARIA BUENO STILL ON LOVE. THEN CAME A DRAMATIC RECOVERY BY THE BRAZILIAN. TWO DOUBLE FAULTS COST MISS SMITH HER DELIVERY IN THE FIFTH GAME AND WITH SMASHING VOLLEYS THAT DREW ROARS OF APPLAUSE FROM THE CROWD MISS BUENO EDGED FORWARD UNTIL THE SCORE STOOD AT FOUR GAMES APIECE. THE ATMOSPHERE TIGHTENED DURING THE NINTH GAME OF THE SET AS MISS BUENO HELD FIVE SUCCESSIVE ADVANTAGE POINTS ON MARGARET SMITH'S SERVICE - BUT THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION SURVIVED AFTER DEUCE HAD BEEN CALLED ??? TIMES.

IN THE FINAL SET BOTH GIRLS HELD DELIVERY CONFIDENTLY UNTIL THREE-ALL. THEN CAME THE VITAL BREAK BY MISS BUENO - HELPED ALONG BY A SUPERB ANGLED VOLLEY AND A BACKHAND PASSING SHOT. THE BRAZILIAN SERVED TO 5-3 AND WENT TO 15-30 ON MISS SMITH'S DELIVERY WHEN THE AUSTRALIAN SERVED ANOTHER DOUBLE FAULT - HER NINTH. MISS SMITH NETTED A STOP VOLLEY TO GIVE MISS BUENO TWO MATCH POINTS. SHE NEEDED ONLY ONE TO WIN AGAIN THE TITLE SHE HELD IN BOTH 1959 AND 1960. THE HUGE CROWD APPLAUDED LOUDLY AS MISS BUENO RECEIVED THE COVETED GOLD-PLATED SALVER FROM PRINCES MARINA.

LATER MARGARET SMITH, FREE FROM THE TENSIONS OF THE SINGLES FINALS, TEAMED WITH LESLEY TURNER TO WIN THE WOMEN'S DOUBLES TITLES. THE AUSTRALIAN PAIR WON 7-5, 6-2 AGAINST MRS. KAREN SUSMAN OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS AND BILLIE-JEAN MOFFITT OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA. MRS SUSMAN SHOWED BRILLIANT PLAY THROUGHOUT THE MATCH - EASILY THE BEST OF THE FOUR - BUT WITH MISS MOFFITT MAKING MANY ERRORS AT THE NET, THEY NEVER LOOKED LIKE REGAINING THE TITLE THEY HELD IN 1961 AND 1962.
