  • Description

THOUSANDS OF GREEK CYPRIOT SCHOOLCHILDREN CARRYING FLAGS AND SHOUTING THE OLD CHANTS OF "ENOSIS", "EOKA" AND "MAKARIOS" MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF NICOSIA, MARCH 29TH, IN A FRESH OUTBREAK OF ANTI-TURKISH FEELING.

THE OUTBURST WAS SPARKED OFF AFTER RUMOURS THAT A FIRE WHICH DAMAGED PORTION OF A GREEK SCHOOL THE NIGHT BEFORE HAD BEEN DELIBERATELY CAUSED BY TURKS. BEGINNING WITH A SMALL GROUP OF CHILDREN AGED BETWEEN 6 AND 10 YEARS, THE PARADE RAPIDLY SWELLED AS TEENAGERS AND ELDER CHILDREN FROM ALL OVER THE CITY JOINED IN, IGNORING APPEALS BY THEIR TEACHERS TO RETURN TO SCHOOL.

POLICE DISPERSED THE CHILDREN AT THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT TO FORM UP, BUT LATER THEY REASSEMBLED IN METAXAS SQUARE, WHICH DURING THE EMERGENCY WAS THE SCENE OF MANY ANTI-BRITISH RIOTS, THEN MARCHED THROUGH LEDRA STREET, NOTORIOUS A FEW YEARS AGO AS "MURDER MILE".

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS THE LATEST OF A SERIES OF RECENT DISTURBANCES WHICH HAVE WORRIED AUTHORITIES IN CYPRUS. ON MARCH 25TH TWO TURKISH CYPRIOT MOSQUES IN NICOSIA WERE DAMAGED BY TIME BOMBS SET OFF DURING GREEK INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS.
