  • Description

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL'S OFFICE IS TO PROSECUTE OVER 2,000 STATE CORPORATIONS, GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND PRIVATE COMPANIES WHICH HAVE NOT PAID THEIR WORKERS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GHANAIAN SOCIAL SECURITY FUND. THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE STATE INSURANCE CORPORATION, MR. ANTHONY WOODE, ANNOUNCED THE PROSECUTIONS ON MONDAY DURING A NEWS CONFERENCE ON THE SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME.

THE STATE INSURANCE CORPORATION WAS ESTABLISHED AS A PRIVATE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY IN THE MIDDLE-50's, AND IN 1957 IT BECAME THE GHANA INSURANCE COMPANY. FIVE YEARS LATER IT WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE GOVERNMENT.

THE CORPORATION NOW HAS 14 BRANCHES THROUGHOUT GHANA, WITH A HEAD OFFICE IN ACCRA. IT HANDLES FIRE, ACCIDENT AND LIFE INSURANCE, AND ALSO ADMINISTERS THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT.

MUCH OF THE CORPORATION'S WORK HAS BEEN COMPUTERISED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS -- INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM ITS TWELVE DEPARTMENTS IS ALL PROCESSED IN A CENTRALISED COMPUTER SECTION IN ACCRA.

BY THE END OF JUNE THIS YEAR THE CORPORATION HAD PAID OUT NEARLY 540,000 NEW CEDIS (270,000 STERLING) IN BENEFITS FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND. BUT ACCORDING TO MR. WOODE NON-PAYMENT BY MANY CONTRIBUTORS IS RAPIDLY DEPLETING THE FUND.

WORKERS HAVE CONTRIBUTED SOME 28 MILLION NEW CEDIS (14 MILLION STERLING), BUT GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND STATE CORPORATIONS STILL OWE A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 24 MILLION NEW CEDIS (12 MILLION STERLING).
