  • Description

Eight justices in the Unites States Supreme Court in Washington, heard the arguments that could decide the Watergate scandal on Monday (8 July).

Watergate prosecutor Mr. Leon Jaworski wanted the justices to force President Nixon to hand over 64 tape recordings of private White House conversations. The taps are required for the Watergate cover-up trial in September.

The other point President Nixon's lawyers and the special Watergate prosecutor are arguing over is whether the Watergate Grand Jury has the power to name Mr. Nixon as an unindicted co-conspirator in the cover-up.

The court room was full well before the hearing started and hundreds of people waited outside.

In the three-hour hearing, President Nixon's lawyers Mr. James St. Clair argued that the Supreme Court dealt with criminal matters and should stay clear of the political battle to impeach Mr. Nixon which was up to the legislative branch in the shape of the judiciary committee.
