  • Description

Doctor Henry Kissinger's deadline for bringing an end to fighting between Syria and Israel is drawing near with no signs that the two countries are willing to stop firing. The American Secretary of State said a week ago that he would leave for Washington on the weekend of May 25-26, even if an agreement was not reached.

While his diplomatic shuttle between Damascus and Jerusalem was going on the two countries have been exchanging artillery shells on the strategic Golan Heights. Both sides have kept up the duel since the October War last year and towns on both sides have suffered. Over the last eleven weeks the artillery battles have been constant. Both sides have employed aircraft and the fighting has been further escalated by armoured vehicles and tanks. The clashes are taking place all along the Golan Heights and have been particularly heave in the Mount Hermon region.

Military casualties have been relatively light, but many local farmers and villagers have been forced to leave their homes. Stock losses have heavy and damage in villages extreme.
