  • Description

EIGHT PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 64 WERE INJURED WHEN A SABOTEUR'S BOMB - PLANTED IN AN EMPTY PETROL TANKER - BLASTED A CROWDED STREET IN THE LAGOS SUBURB OF YABA. THE LOCAL TELEPHONE EXCHANGE, TAXATION DEPARTMENT AND CINEMA WERE ALL SEVERELY DAMAGED.

THE BOMB EXPLODED JUST OPPOSITE THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE, BRINGING DOWN POWER CABLES AND BLACKING OUT THE AREA. AMBULANCES RAN A SHUTTLE SERVICE TO HOSPITALS AS FIREMEN PROBED THE DEBRIS.

THE LOCAL CINEMA - "THE TIVOLI" - WOULD ALMOST CERTAINLY HAVE BEEN FULL IF THE EXPLOSION HAD OCCURRED 30 MINUTES LATER. THE CORRUGATED IRON WALLS OF THE CINEMA WERE BLOWN OPEN AND THE INTERIOR WAS BADLY DAMAGED.

THOUSANDS OF DOCUMENTS WERE DESTROYED AT THE INLAND REVENUE OFFICE, WHICH WAS ALSO CONSIDERABLY DAMAGED.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH - ON JULY 2 - SABOTEURS TRIED TO BLOW UP THE POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN LAGOS WITH A CAR LOAD OF EXPLOSIVES. BUT THE PLAN MISFIRED, AND THE BOOBY-TRAPPED CAR DESTROYED A NEARBY HOUSE, KILLING FOUR PEOPLE. A SECOND BLAST THE SAME NIGHT SHATTERED A PETROL FILLING STATION.

FOLLOWING THE YABA EXPLOSION, POLICE AND TROOPS TIGHTENED ROADBLOCKS IN FORCE AROUND THE CITY SINCE THE EASTERN REGION BROKE AWAY FROM THE FEDERATION.
