    ELDO -- THE EUROPEAN LAUNCHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION -- WHICH PLANS TO PUT A EUROPEAN SATELLITE INTO SPACE IN 1966, IS CURRENTLY TESTING A MOCK-UP OF THE ROCKET IN THE WIND TUNNEL OF THE DUTCH NATIONAL LABORATORY FOR AVIATION AND SPACE TRAVEL.

    ELDO IS A COMBINED PROGRAMME. BRITAIN IS SUPPLYING THE FIRST STAGE OF THE ROCKET, OF WHICH THE PROTOTYPE IS ALREADY STANDING ON THE LAUNCH PAD IN AUSTRALIA; FRANCE IS PRODUCING THE SECOND STAGE; AND WEST GERMANY THE THIRD STAGE. HOLLAND WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMUNICATIONS, BELGIUM FOR TELEMETRY MEASUREMENTS OF DATA RECEIVED, AND ITALY FOR THE ACTUAL SATELLITE.

    WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN VISITED THE WIND-TUNNEL A MODEL OF THE ROCKET WAS BEING TESTED FOR WIND EFFECTS ON LAUNCHING IT WAS ONE-TWENTIETH OF THE ACTUAL SIZE.

    THE DUTCH LABORATORY'S WIND TUNNEL, WHICH IS CONSIDERED THE FINEST IN EUROPE, IS AVAILABLE TO ANYONE AT A COST OF GBP1,800 A DAY.

    IT IS ALSO BEING USED BY THE WEST GERMAN FIRM, DORNIER SYSTEMS, WHO ARE DEVELOPING A ROCKET WHICH CAN BE BROUGHT BACK TO EARTH, AND THE FRENCH.
