  • Description

THE SIX MEMBERS OF A BRITISH WOMEN'S MOUNTAINEERING TEAM SET OFF FROM REMOTE NEPALGANJI IN WEST NEPAL FOR AN ASSAULT ON A PREVIOUSLY UNCLIMBED PEAK IN THE KANJIROBA RANGE, MARCH 28. THEIR GOAL IS THE SUMMIT OF AN UNNAMED 23,000 FOOT MOUNTAIN BELIEVED TO BE THE HIGHEST IN THE RANGE.

LEADING THE EXPEDITION - KNOWN AS JAGDULA 1962 - WAS THE COUNTESS DOROTHEA GRAVINA OF KENT. IN 1959 SHE WAS DEPUTY LEADER OF A CLIMB ON CHO OYU WHICH ENDED IN DISASTER AND THE DEATH OF THREE OF ITS MEMBERS IN AN AVALANCHE.

ITS EQUIPMENT LASHED TO A TRAIN OF 38 DONKEYS, THE EXPEDITION MOVED OFF WITH ITS GUIDES AND PORTERS ON THE FOUR WEEK TREK TO THE FOOT OF THE MOUNTAIN. THE DEPARTURE HAD BEEN DELAYED FOR A WEEK BY A HINDU RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY.

THE COUNTRY THE WOMEN WERE ENTERING IS LARGELY UNSURVEYED AND IS SOME OF THE LONELIEST AND MOST RUGGED IN THE WORLD.
