  • Description

AGRICULTURE MINISTER OF THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET MET IN BRUSSELS TODAY (MONDAY) TO DISCUSS THEIR FUTURE TIMETABLE AND A NUMBER OF TECHNICAL PROBLEMS. TALKS CONTINUE TOMORROW.

AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE WAS REACHED ON THE TIMETABLE PROPOSED BY THE POLICY-MAKING COMMISSION. THE TIMETABLE PROVIDES FOR THE FIXING OF COMMON PRICES FOR A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS BEFORE THE END OF JUNE. BUT A FINAL DECISION ON THE TIMETABLE WAS PUT OFF UNTIL COMMON MARKET'S FULL COUNCIL MEETS ON FEBRUARY 1 AND 2.

THE MINISTERS ALSO AGREED IN PRINCIPLE ON ANOTHER COMMISSION PROPOSAL: THE FIXING OF A TARIFF QUOTA FOR IMPORTS OF BEEF AND CATTLE INTO ANY OF THE SIX MEMBER COUNTRIES FROM OUTSIDE. A FINAL DECISION WAS DELAYED BY A WEST GERMAN DEMAND FOR A SPECIAL QUOTA FOR BERLIN. THIS DEMAND WILL BE STUDIED WHEN THE MEETING RESUMES TOMORROW.

    M. PISANI IS PRESIDING OVER THE MEETING.

(BEFORE TODAY'S SESSION BEGAN, DELEGATES OBSERVED ONE MINUTE'S SILENCE FOR SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL).
