Background: Representing the churches of the Western world, 87 delegates of many races and creeds met in Johannesburg Dec 7 to discuss the various problems arising from the South African Government's policy of "Apartheid".

They describe their basic task as determining "according to the scriptures, the Christian duty in today's racial situation in South Africa". It was the first time a world movement of this kind had assembled in the country to discuss the domestic policy of the Government.

The delegates included some of the Union's most controversial figures. Among these were Archbishop Joost de Blank of Capetown, and Mr. Alan Paton.

Organization of the conference was by the World Council of Churches in Geneva. The Council represents 173 Protestant Churches and eight of these member churches are in the Union. They are the three Afrikaans Churches, the Anglican Church, the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church.

During their discussions of Christian duty in relationship to apartheid, the delegates were though likely to hear conflicting views on the time factor. Many of them were expected to press for an assessment of Christian duty and action immediately.
