  • Description

The Republic of China re-established its table tennis supremacy at the 33rd World Championships in Calcutta Monday (10 February) by taking both the men's and women's team titles.

In the Swaythling Cup men's final they crushed Yugoslavia by five matches to two. And, after a close contest, the Chinese women deposed the title-holders, South Korea, with a 3-2 victory to take the Corbillon Cup.

China last achieved the "double" in 1965. After that success they temporarily withdrew from international sport. On their return to the world championships in 1971 and 1975 they narrowly failed to gain a team title.

This year they dominated the men's event but only just overcame the South Korea women whose top player, Ailesa Lee was badly off form.

This performance has made the Chinese clear favourites in the five individual events which begin on Wednesday (13 February).
