Their village was destroyed and they were forced to leave, News agencies reported that during the fist week as many as 13,000 inhabitants from two of the large villages alone were evacuated from their homes.

A Government spokesman said that in a week of fighting up to Friday (13 December), there were 810 civilian casualties throughout South Vietnam. These included 128 killed, 466 wounded and 216 missing.

The Saigon Command said the latest upsurge was the highest level of fighting since the Vietnam ceasefire declaration almost two years ago. Both sides have trade allegations of trying to seize the Delta's rich rice harvest.
