  • Description

West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, the first German head of state to visit Israel, has been continuing his talks with Prime Minister Golda Meir on the Middle East situation, the European Economic Community (EEC) and bilateral relations.

On Friday (8 June), Mr. Brandt met the new Israeli President, Professor Ephraim Katzir, who presented the West German leader with a 2,000-year-old coloured glass vase.

Later on Friday, Mr. Brandt dined in the communal hall of the Ein Gev kibbutz (collective farm) -- home of Deputy Prime Minister Yigal Allon.

Mr. Brandt announced on Friday that Mrs. Meir had accepted his invitation to visit West Germany -- a trip the Israeli Prime Minister was known to be reluctant to make because of World War Two memories.
