  • Description

On the second day of his official visit East Berlin, Mr.Khruschev addressed the East German Parliament in Berlin and warned that Berlin would become a "desert" in any atomic war between East and West.

He confirmed the offer that he made recently on television that Russia would quit Europe if the United States did the same.

"The Soviet Union has always proposed the gradual withdrawal of foreign troops from Germany. She is now also offering to withdraw her troops from Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary, providing the United States withdraw their troops from France, Britain and other countries".

While denying that he wished to influence the West German elections, Mr.Khruschev attacked the West German Chancellor more bitterly than he has ever done before. He compared Dr.Adanauer's policies with those of Hitler, which had brought Germany to disaster.

Dr.Dieckmann, the Speaker of the House, welcoming various guests who were present, had a special word for eight British Socialist M.P.'s. They had come, he said, "in spite of difficulties".

All these M.P.'s were present at the invitation of the German branch of the "International Conference for the Peaceful Solution of the German Question", a distinguished Communist organisation. Their presence at the East German Parliament has given particular distress to West German Socialists.

Before leaving Berlin by train for Leipzig, Mr.Khruschev separated himself for an hour from his German hosts when he went to visit the vast memorial in the Soviet cemetery at Treptow where 4,000 Russian soldiers are buried.

It was sunset as he followed his enormous wreath for nearly a mile through the avenue of trees. A band played the old haunting German tune that international Communism has adopted as its funeral march.

He disappeared into a door in the plinth, where the names of the Russian soldiers who died in the capture of Berlin are recorded.

Minutes later he returned and started the long walk back - weeping as he left.
