IN HIS CLUB'S PEDAL MACHINE, "PUFFIN", MR WIMPENNY, WITH HIS HEAD DOWN IN THE CONVENTIONAL RACING CYCLISTS POSITION, FLEW AT AN AVERAGE HEIGHT OF 5 FEET AT ABOUT 19 1/2 MILES PER HOUR.

HE WON THE FIRST PRIZE EVER TO BE AWARDED FOR MAN-POWERED FLIGHT BY THE ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY - GBP50, GIVEN BY AN ANONYMOUS DONOR.

THE PEDAL AIRCRAFT "PUFFIN" IS ONE OF SEVERAL CONTENDERS FOR THE GBP5,000 PRIZE OFFERED FOR THE FIRST MAN-POWERED FLIGHT OF ONE MILE OVER A FIGURE-OF-EIGHT COURSE. FROM THIS STRAIGHT 1/2-MILE FLIGHT IT WAS THOUGHT THAT "PUFFIN'S" CHANCES OF SUCCESS WERE FAIRLY HIGH.
