  • Description

American tennis star Arthur Ashe was in top form in the Rothman's international Indoor Tennis Tournament at London's Albert hall on Wednesday (20 February). He beat fellow countryman Harold Solomon 6-1, 601 to reach the quarter final after only 40 minutes' play.

Ashe is seabed third in the GBP 20,000 prize-money (about 44,000 U.S. dollars) competition. The 21-year-old Solomon had no match for Ashe's strong serving and accurate return shots.

The first two seeds, Australia's Rod Lever and Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia, have already won their way through to the quarter finals. Britain's Stechen Warboys produced the surprise of the day by beating fourth-seed Adriano Panatta of Italy 7-6, 7-6.

Most of the early round matches were played at Queensferry in North wales.
