  • Description

The 28 anti-nuclear marchers, who left England for France, June 12, on their way to Moscow, were not allowed to land when they reached Le Havre aboard the "Normannia", June 13.

A welcoming committee of French demonstrators with anti-nuclear banners had to remain on the quayside, while the peace walkers were kept on board to be taken back to Southampton. The foiled marchers included thirteen Americans who set out from San Francisco and fifteen others who joined them in Britain.

Later in the day, nine of the campaigners jumped into the harbour and swam ashore. they managed to give an impromptu news conference before the police rounded them up and put them back aboard the channel steamer. Another of the marchers - an American girl who got ashore by posing as a journalist - was not allowed to return to the ship.
