  • Description

SCOPE: This coverage is of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (4th TFW) which is located at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, as they arrive at Spangdahlem AB, Germany, to participate in exercises designed to provide training in intercontinental movements and European theatre familiarization.

BACKGROUND: More than 180 U. S.-based tactical aircraft will visit Europe for training purposes during the next year. The aircraft, assigned to the Tactical Air Command (TAC), will arrive in Europe for a series of 11 separate short-term exercises designed to provide training in intercontinental movements and European theatre familiarization. Each will last for approximately two weeks. These exercises are in addition to the annual exercise "Crested Cap," which tests the effectiveness of U. S.-based NATO-committed air units to deploy to their European home bases for a month long training period.

This will mark the first time that the USAF A-7D, conventional-capable fighter bomber, has been deployed to Europe. Other aircraft involved in this exercise include F-4 and RF-4 Phantoms, F-111 fighter/bombers, and F-100 Super Sabres.

The first deploying unit, from F-4 equipped 4th Tactical Fighter Wing located at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, arrived at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, on July 11, 1975. Other United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) bases to host deploying units include Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and RAF stations Upper Heyford, Alconbury, and Lakenheath in the United Kingdom. Military Airlift Command (MAC) C-141 transports will airlift the support people, and Strategic Air Command (SAC) KC-135 tankers will provide aerial refuelling support. Air refuelling support within Europe will be provided by Air National Guard KC-97 aircraft.

Tactical Air Command units involved in the deployment include the 33rd TFW, Eglin AFR, Florida; 4th TFW, Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina; 23rd TFW, England AFB, Louisiana; 354th TFW, Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina; 366th TFW, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; and the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW) from Shaw AFB, South Carolina. Participating Air National Guard units and Air Force Reservists include the 140th TFW, Buckley Air National Guard Base, Colorado; 117th TRW, Birmingham Municipal Airport, Alabama; 122nd TFW, Baer Field, Indiana; and the 132nd TFW, Des Moines Military Airport, Iowa.
