  • Description

THE ANGLO-FRENCH SUPERSONIC AIRLINER, THE CONCORDE, MADE A PERFECT TAKE OFF ON ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT TODAY (MONDAY) FROM THE TOULOUSE AIRPORT. THE TAKE OFF, HELD UP FOR TWO DAYS BY ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS, WAS AGAIN DELAYED UNTIL LATE AFTERNOON BECAUSE OF MORNING FOG AND CLOUD.

THE CONCORDE STAYED IN THE AIR FOR 27 MINUTES, ABOUT 10 MINUTES LESS THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED. IT HAD BEEN PLANNED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WOULD MAKE TWO CIRCUITS OF THE AIRPORT, BUT PILOT ANDRE TURCAT WAS SO SATISFIED WITH THE WAY IT HANDLED THAT HE LANDED AFTER ONLY ONE. HIS CREW FOR THE FLIGHT CONSISTED OF A CO-PILOT, A FLIGHT TEST OBSERVER AND A FLIGHT ENGINEER.

TODAY THEY CHECKED CONCORDE'S HANDLING AT 250 KNOTS, LESS THAN ONE FIFTH THE SPEED THAT THE AIRLINER WILL BE EXPECTED TO CRUISE AT WHEN IT GOES INTO SERVICE. FOR THIS FIRST TEST THE WHEELS WERE LEFT DOWN THROUGHOUT AND THE NOSE WAS IN THE DROOPED POSITION. FOR SUPERSONIC FLIGHT THE NOSE HAS TO BE RAISED TO ACT AS A TRANSPARENT COCKPIT VISOR TO REDUCE DRAG AND FRICTION.

THE FOUR ENGINED AIRCRAFT, WHICH WEIGHS 130 TONS IN THE HANGAR CARRIED 6,500 GALLONS (29,300 LITRES) OF FUEL FOR THE FLIGHT. TWO ESCORT AIRCRAFT FLEW ALONGSIDE CONCORDE PHOTOGRAPHING THE FLIGHT.

THE PROTOTYPE CONCORDE WAS NUMBER 001; 002 HAS BEEN ASSEMBLED IN BRITAIN, AND IS DUE TO MAKE ITS FIRST FLIGHT IN SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS TIME. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COSTS ON THE 130 SEATER SUPERSONIC AIRLINER ARE NOT THOUGHT LIKELY TO REACH ABOUT GBP700 MILLION STERLING. TODAY'S FLIGHT WAS THE FIRST STEP IN A TEST PROGRAMME THAT SHOULD LAST ABOUT THREE YEARS. THE FLIGHT WAS PLANNED FOR OVER A YEAR AGO, BUT HELD UP BY TECHNICAL DELAYS. SUD AVIATION AND THE BRITISH AVIATION CORPORATION, THE JOINT MAKERS OF THE AIRLINER, HOPE THAT IT WILL BE READY TO GO INTO SERVICE BY 1973.

THE WORLD'S FIRST SUPERSONIC AIRLINER, THE SOVIET TUPOLEV TU-144, MADE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT FROM MOSCOW AIRPORT ON NEW YEAR'S EVE.
