Athletes from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Somalia, Ethiopia, Zanzibar and the Sudan turned in some top performances at the two day East and Central African Athletic Championships held in Mombasa on Friday and Saturday (5-6 September).

Bronze medallist for the 10,000 metre event at the Munich Olympics, Miraz Yiftar of Ethiopia, thrilled the large crowd at the Municipal stadium on Saturday by winning the race in twenty-nine minutes four point three seconds, the best time ever recorded on African soil. Yiftar is now considered a gold medal prospect for next year's Montreal Olympics.

In Saturday's eight hundred metre final, Kenyan Daniel Omwansa beat Tanzania's Gilbert Bayi with fellow Kenyan Sammy Kipkurgat coming in third. With their performances all three reached the qualifying standard set down for the event at next year's Olympics.
