    MR.HENRY CABOT LODGE, AMERICAN AMBASSADOR IN SAIGON, HAS PROTESTED TO THE SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT AGAINST AN ALLEGED ATTACK ON THREE AMERICAN REPORTERS BY PLAIN-CLOTHES VIETNAMESE POLICE.THE REPORTERS SAID THAT POLICE BEGAN HARASSING THEM AS THEY LEFT A MARKET PLACE WHERE A BUDDHIST MONK HAD BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH.

    ONE OF THEM, MR.JOHN SHARKEY, OF THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY-SHOWN BEING LED ACROSS THE SQUARE ON SATURDAY (OCT 5) JUST AFTER THE ALLEGED BEATING - WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FOR A HEAD WOUND REQUIRING EIGHT STITCHES.ACCOMPANYING HIS WAS N.B.C.CAMERAMAN GRANT WOLFKILL, WHO SAID HIS NECK WAS BADLY CUT BY, HE THOUGHT, A PISTOL BUTT.THE THIRD MEMBER, DAVID HALBERSTAM OF THE "NEW YORK TIMES", WAS BRUISED AND SHAKEN BUT NOT BADLY HURT.

    IN THE PAST, THE SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT HAS CLAIMED THAT TELEVISION CAMERAMEN AND REPORTERS HAVE BEEN IN COMPLICITY WITH THE BUDDHISTS.PRESIDENT NGO DINH DIEM SAID CAMERAMEN HAD PAID BUDDHISTS TO STAGE ONE BURNING - DESPITE THE FACT THAT NO CAMERAMEN WERE ON THE SPOT WHEN THE BURNING OCCURRED.
