    The Shah of Iran joined Turkish leaders on Wednesday (29 October) in celebrating the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish Republic.

    Heavy security surrounded the celebrations which included a military parade and a fly-past in the capital, Ankara.

    Waves of jets, including American-built F-4E Phantoms, skimmed the rooftops of Ankara, as a demonstrations of military might following the partial lifting of the U.S. arms embargo.

    In an anniversary address, President Fahri Koruturk referred to the assassinations of the Turkish ambassadors to Austria and France last week. He said he damned the uncivilised attacks in Vienna and Paris.

    "Such uncivilised aggression must never be forgiven," he said,"the Turkish nation will never forgive."
    President Koruturk was congratulated by the Shah of Iran who is in Turkey on a five-day state visit. The Turkish and Iranian leaders are discussing establishing further joint economic and agricultural-industrial projects and a joint armaments industry.

    The Celebrations mark the beginning of the Turkish Republic in 1923 when Mustapha Kemal Ataturk, a General in World Ware One, led a majority of the National Assembly to proclaim the republic.
