  • Description

Cheering crowds greeted Archbishop Makarios at St. Andrew's Monastery, Nov. 30, when he arrived here during an election tour of villages in the north-east of Cyprus.

Rallying support for the island's first presidential election - to be held Dec. 13 - Archbishop Makarios has been given a tumultuous welcome nearly everywhere - proof enough of the tremendous popularity he enjoys among the villagers.

In spite of all popular acclaim, Makarios, supported by EDMA, is by no means the undisputed final choice of the Greek Cypriots. Meetings held by the newly formed Democratic Union, backing presidential candidate John Clerides, drew some 40,00 people. Clerides also has the support of AKEL, the Progressive Party of the Working People, which has been banned during the past four years.

In the midst of the island's pre-election activities, Governor Sir Hugh Foot announced, Dec. 1, the ending of the state of emergency in Cyprus, and with it the lifting of the ban on left-wing organisations, including AKEL. The Governor said he hoped to make the necessary enactments and give the necessary orders this week. It has been argued that continuing the ban would not only be a breach of democratic principles but would also serve merely to make the Communists "martyrs" and to encourage them to infiltrate into other organisations. Both Archbishop Makarios and Dr. Kutchuk are understood to have been in sympathy with this view.
