Madras is one of the States of Indian union, in South of the country. A coastal state, it is inhabited by Tamil speaking people of Dravadian origin. The languages which are in most common use in Madras, are Tamil, the local language of the people and English which is the official language of the State and is widely used by business community and common people in their daily business. The recent promulgation of Hindi as the official language of the Indian Union, resulted in serious rioting in Madras. The people here fear a serious handicap in competing for all India civil services and in other business if Hindi is suddenly imposed on them, with English, they rightly consider as competing at par with Hindi speaking people. One hardly finds any Hindi signs in Madras--the streets are filled with English and Tamil signs. Even the names of Hindi cinema films are written in Tamil. The book stalls display a large number of English and Tamil books---no Hindi books at all. Even though Anti Hindi posters and banners were quickly taken off by the Police, several areas are still witness to this anti Hindi feeling in Madras.
Madras is a conservative Hindu area where one finds fabulous temples and roaside shrines. Cows bathe on the famous Marina beach, the finest and in India. There is great deal of poverty in Madras, and men can be seen pulling rikshaws or hand carts to make their daily living. Madras city is a booming town, where farmers bring their fruits and vegetables and sell them on the footh path. The people are extremely docile and law abiding and when such a people resort to violence, they must have strong feelings.
