  • Description

Libya's Prime Minister, Major Abdul Salem Jalloud, acting as a meditator in the 16-month civil war in Lebanon has announced a truce agreement between Syrian and Palestinian forces operating in Lebanon.

SYNOPSIS: Major Jalloud was conducting his mediation efforts in the Syrian capital, Damascus. At a news conference on Wednesday (28 July) he said Syrian and Palestinian forces, both involved on opposite sides of the war in Lebanon between right-wing Christians and left-wing Moslems, had agreed on a pact. The pact was signed the following day. Major Jalloud said the agreement was a serious affair meant to restore peace in Lebanon and to establish stable relations between the Lebanese and Palestinians, and between Syrians and Palestinians'. The agreement also called for a cease-fire in Lebanon, according to reports from the Lebanese capital, Beirut. There have been more than 50 cease-fires in Lebanon since the war began, none of which have lasted for more than a few days. According to the same reports from Beirut, the Palestinian-Syrian agreement would also seek negotiations between the warring factions in Lebanon, and the formation of a government of national unity under President-elect Elias Sarkis. Before leaving Damascus for home, Major Jalloud had final discussions with Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam and Palestinian delegate Farouk Kaddoumi.
