Background: The Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis, was buried at a simple Greek Orthodox ceremony on Tuesday (18 March) on his Ionian island of Scorpios.
Mr. Onassis, 69, died in Paris last Saturday (15 March) of bronchial pneumonia.
He was buried near a hilltop chapel, beside his only son, Alexandros, who was killed at the age of 24 in a plane crash two years ago.
The funeral service was conducted by a village priest in the whitewashed chapel where Mr. Onassis had married his wife, the former Jacqueline Kennedy, in 1968.
She was at the funeral with her two children and Senator Edward Kennedy, her former brother-in-law.
Christina Onassis, the daughter of the dead multi-millionaire by a previous marriage, and his three sisters, were also at the service.
At the end of the service the mourners kissed the plain wooden coffin before attending the traditional reception at which black coffee is served.
